Halloween History

History of Halloween

The word, Halloween or Hallowe’en dates from before the 16th century and draws from its early Christian past. In old Scottish, Hallowe’en translates as “All Hallows’ (holy) Even” referring to “All Hallows’ Evening,” the day before All Hallows Day, a solemn occasion in which all of the Catholic Church’s heavenly saints were honored. By the 18th century, Halloween shows up with the spelling we know today.

Halloween History

Going back in time, Halloween is fascinating because it has lots of practices that date back to its pagan origins. For example, the Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples reminds us of the Roman invasion of England. As part of Roman paganism, they brought an apple tree, symbolic of Pomona, Goddess of Plenty. During an annual festival, young marriage-minded people bit into apples floating in the water. According to beliefs, whoever bit the apple was next to marry.

But it’s really the Celts we have to thank for Halloween. They were ancient people who lived in the areas of modern-day Ireland, northern France, and in the UK. Halloween’s pagan roots go back thousands of years to the Celtic Fire Festival of Samhain, which recognized the end of the harvest season and the start of their new year on November 1.

During this festival, pagans wore costumes and lit fires to keep the bad spirits away – keep that in mind when you’re donning your Dracula fangs! With the dark nights of winter representing death, the Celts believed that on October 31, the dead returned to walk among the living. Sounds kind of zombie-ish, right?

The Christian Influence

As Christian influence on society began to grow around the 8th century, new customs and traditions were brought in and merged with those of the Celts. Christians would celebrate All Souls Day on November 2, which was a day to honor the dead in much the same way that the Celts did on Samhain. It was around this time that the evening before the celebration became known as All Hallows Eve.

After All Hallows Day was officially switched to November 1 in 835, October 31 became known as All Hallows Eve and the holiday we know and love today was starting to take shape. By the 12th century, these days had gained holy importance throughout Europe, and customs such as ringing the church bells for the souls of those in purgatory had become widespread.

A typical Halloween would see a mournful crier parading through the streets, dressed all in black, ringing bells, and encouraging the locals to pray for the souls of the dead. It was around this time that “souling” began to happen, but there’s more about that further down in the trick-or-treat section. By the Middle Ages churches were too poor to display the relics of martyred saints and so churchgoers began dressing up as them every year instead. This could partly explain where the tradition of dressing up on Halloween stems from.

Halloween in America

Halloween became popular in America in the 19th century, with enthusiasm for the holiday being brought across with the Irish and Scottish immigrants who were arriving at the time. The biggest change from Halloween’s earliest roots is that it becomes more secular than religious. By the 1920s and 30s, Halloween parades and parties became a major part of the festivities and the holiday was celebrated from coast to coast, regardless of race or religious background.

Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating is said to stem from the practice of “souling”, which is a Medieval practice where churchgoers would go between different parishes and ask the rich for pastries which were known as soul cakes. In return, they would pray for the souls of them and their friends. While “souling”, people would carry with them lanterns made of hollowed-out turnips. That turnip is now of course a pumpkin and it is believed that that the jack-o-lantern originally represented the souls of the dead.

By the late 19th century children in Scotland and Ireland were dressing up in costume and going from door to door accepting gifts from neighbors, this practice was known as “guising”. The children would generally be given bits of food for their efforts. The first recorded instance of this in America is in 1911. The term trick-or-treat was first used in Alberta, Canada, in 1927, and by the 1930s it was starting to become a popular activity.

Modern Day Halloween

By the 1950s Halloween became a holiday that was primarily for the children. Trick-or-treating was commonplace as kids went around their neighborhoods in costume collecting candy. Halloween became increasingly embedded in popular culture and horror movies would often be released to coincide with the holiday. Movies such as “Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween,” and “Friday the 13th” have all become classics associated with the holiday.

Halloween is now America’s second-largest commercial holiday, with $6 billion being spent on it each year. Numerous traditions such as trick-or-treating, costume parties, and watching horror movies all contribute towards a huge occasion that is celebrated throughout the country.

Halloween plays off our phobias. Killer clowns and antique dolls creep you out? Bats and spiders make your skin crawl? Does the sight of blood make you faint? Don’t go into that room and don’t go out on Halloween. But if you do — look over your shoulder! On Halloween, be a kid again or take on a new persona. Watch out for ghosts and goblins and things that go, “bump” in the night. Eat as much candy as your tummy can hold. Enjoy feeling totally scared for just. one. night. Happy Halloween, everybody!

Halloween on October 31 is undoubtedly the creepiest, most ghostly holiday of them all. Children dress up as Batman, the Joker, Wonder Woman, or some other favorite character; go to parties or walk their neighborhoods with jack o’ lanterns full of sweets as they go trick-or-treating. Spooky decorations fill windows and porches and screams can be heard in living rooms up and down the country as we collectively binge our favorite horror movies.

5 Crazy Facts About Halloween Candy

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays — it’s the perfect combination of scares and sweets.  This year we’re definitely hoping for a Halloween with more sweets and treats than screams and scares. To celebrate all things sweet, See’s Candies is sharing some fun facts about Halloween candy. So sit back, relax, unwrap some chocolates, and enjoy these spooky facts.

Fact 1: Candy Corn Can Circle the Earth 4 Times

Yes, you read that right. Every year some 35 million pounds are made (and most are consumed around Halloween). If you were to lay each of those kernels end to end they’d circle the Earth 4.25 times — that’s nearly 106,000 miles of candy corn.

Fact 2: Half of the United States Will Buy Candy at Halloween

According to data from 2019, 172 million people celebrated Halloween, 95% of whom will purchase candy. That’s half the country! It’s unclear how much of that candy is being given out to kids and how much we adults are hoarding for ourselves and definitely we’re not telling.

Fact 3: The World’s Largest Lollipop Weighed More Than 11 Grizzly Bears

This one comes from our friends at See’s! Back in 2012 they made history by creating the world’s largest lollipop. At 7,003 pounds and 5’ 11” tall, the lollipop weighed as much as nearly a dozen bears, 1.5 luxury sedans, or 5 horses. Add in the stick and it was more than 16’ high!

Fact 4: Candy Wasn’t Even the OG Halloween Treat

These days, Halloween and candy go together hand in hand, but it wasn’t always the case. In the 1930s and 1940s trick-or-treaters could be graced with lots of different things in their baskets from baked goods and fruit, to nuts or even loose change. It wasn’t until the 1950s that Halloween got too big and candy became the norm. We’re grateful for the change … ever accidentally bite into a quarter?

Fact 5: Americans Eat 22 pounds of candy a year

Americans eat a lot of candy, closer to 22 pounds of it. Half of this is chocolate alone (11 pounds). In fact, Americans in total consume 2.8 billion pounds of chocolate every year. But before you start that chant of U-S-A, U-S-A, just know that we’re not the only chocolate loving country. Germans consume nearly 29 pounds of candy and the Swiss consume nearly 20 pounds of chocolate!

Listicles National Protect Your Hearing Month 2021

Now Hear This: 5 Facts About Your Ears

  1. Ears are always on

Even while you sleep, your ears are still at work. The only difference is since you’re unconscious, your brain isn’t processing those sounds you may be hearing.

  2. They’re made up of three bones

These three bones are small enough to be placed together on a penny.

  3. They’re on self-clean mode

Earwax helps keep your ears clean so you don’t have to.

  4. Fish and snakes can hear you

Though they don’t have ears, snakes use their jawbones to identify sounds while fish use ridges on their body to respond to pressure changes.

  5. Limited Hearing

If a sound goes higher than our natural hearing limit, all we’ll hear is a buzz. We don’t recommend you try it out.

Hello? Can you hear us now? Good — because we’ve got to tell you about National Protect Your Hearing Month. This October we focus on causes of hearing loss and ways to prevent it. Studies show one in five Americans older than 12 have experienced hearing loss in an ear. It can result from work-related noise exposure and leisure activities, such as sporting events or concerts. Since noise-induced hearing loss is permanent, it’s better to be proactive. While you don’t have to avoid all noise, maybe skip the front row concert tickets or opt for quiet “you” time instead.

5 Caffeine Facts That'll Keep You Awake

  1. Blame Brazil

This country exports more coffee than any other — almost 5.7 billion pounds each year, according to the International Coffee Organization. Brazil has been the world’s biggest exporter of coffee since the 1800s.

  2. The Finns are highly caffeinated

People in Finland drink more coffee than anybody on earth, consuming about 12 kilograms per person per year, according to the WorldAtlas. Norway comes in a distant second at 9.9.

  3. Withdrawal symptoms get serious

Those who experience symptoms of caffeine withdrawal commonly identify the following reactions as the most severe: headache, fatigue, drowsiness, depressed or irritable mood, and difficulty concentrating.

  4. Consume caffeine carefully

Although rare, people can and have overdosed and died from ingesting too much caffeine.

  5. You can be dependent, but maybe not addicted

Science finds that caffeine doesn't really fit into the category of truly addictive substances. "Caffeine has minor-league side effects compared with real addictive drugs," says Dr. Peter Martin, director of the Institute for Coffee Studies at Vanderbilt University.

We may not think of a caffeine addiction as being something from which we need to recover. But those of us who have tried to abstain from our morning (or midmorning or early afternoon) coffee or soda break know exactly what it’s like to try and kick the habit.

Caffeine is added to many of our favorite products, and it occurs naturally in many others. Often, one of the main reasons we love these products is because of the added kick of that ingredient, natural or otherwise. We can help you get a fix on caffeine addictions with this compendium of facts, figures and cool gifts in observance of Caffeine Addiction Recovery Month in October.

Mental Health Month 2021

Tip: Kohl's Black Friday 2021 Sales: Kohl's Black Friday 2021 Coupons & Deals

In any given year, more than one in five of us will experience some type of mental health problem. It is no surprise, therefore, that there’s a need for an event like Mental Health Awareness Month. It connects us with the issues that face millions of people every year and delivers help for those most in need.

Do you know somebody with a mental health condition? Has a doctor diagnosed you with one? If so, it is time to get involved, raise money, and spread awareness of how things like anxiety and depression affect people’s lives.

Learn about Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is an annual event organized by Mental Health – known historically as the Association for Mental Health. The event aims to enhance the public consciousness of mental health issues through a variety of activities and campaigns that continue for roughly four weeks.

Mental health issues are still widely misunderstood by both the public and mental health professionals. While there is far less stigma surrounding issues that affect the body, health issues that concern the mind still carry some of the burdens of the past. People with depression, for instance, don’t just have the “blues.” Researchers now increasingly believe that the condition results from physiological problems in the brain, many of which relate to environmental factors. Similarly, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, multiple personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and others seem to have biological bases.

These conditions can be challenging to understand from the outside. There’s a tendency to label people living with mental health problems with morally-loaded terms. But practices such as these are unhelpful at best.

Mental Health Awareness Month, therefore, is a chance for everyone to work together to see mental health through a new lens. Philosophically, the event is an effort to alter perceptions. Instead of blaming the individual for their behavior, it is an opportunity to understand the plight of sufferers and find solutions.

History of Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health – formerly known as the Association for Mental Health – organized the first Mental Health Awareness Month in 1949. Interestingly, though, it is not the only society that engages in periodic outreach throughout the year. Other organizations, such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, also get heavily involved in annual campaigns.

Mental health issues are, unfortunately, a scourge on our society – a hidden epidemic that often rumbles on in the background, hiding its scale. Mental Health Awareness Month, therefore, is an attempt to bring these issues to the fore. In the past, the purpose of the month was to raise funds for those affected by various conditions. But in recent times, organizers shifted the emphasis to the problem of stigma.

Stigma is one of the main reasons why people don’t come forward for mental health treatment. Patients view their symptoms as a mark of their character instead of a problem with their biology, outside of their control. People do not see a broken leg as a sign of personal inadequacy, but they may take that view with mental health conditions.

Another purpose of the event is to highlight the fact that treatments are improving with every passing year. Talk therapies, medications, and lifestyle interventions all combine to produce radically beneficial outcomes for patients. There’s no need for people to suffer in silence. Options are available.

In 2008, the theme for Mental Health Awareness month was social connectedness. The organizers wanted to highlight the fact that isolation is a significant driver of mental health issues. People who live alone, especially the elderly, can experience higher rates of depression.

In 2009, they updated the theme to “live your life well.” The idea here was to educate the public on how to adopt pro-mental health lifestyles that could prevent conditions from developing in the first place. There was an emphasis on socializing more, getting exercise, and learning how to deal with stress.

Throughout the subsequent years, organizers introduced the public with a host of new ideas, designed to raise awareness of specific facets of mental health. In 2017, for instance, the theme was “Risky Business” and focused on the behaviors most likely to result in mental illness. These included things like risky sex, troublesome exercise patterns, the use of drugs, and excessive spending.

In 2019, the focus was on getting “fit for the future.” The organizers wanted to help people with mental health conditions lay the groundwork in their lives today to live a happy and prosperous life tomorrow.

How to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health is a significant concern in our society, but it is also something that we can each address individually. The good news is that you can get involved with the effort and lend a helping hand to those around you.

The easiest way to get involved in Mental Health Awareness Month is to download the Mental Health Month Toolkit. This resource provides you with practically everything that you need to improve your own mental health, and that of the people around you. It includes material that helps you to own your feelings, look for the positives in situations, and eliminate the toxic influences on your life. It also provides information on how to create a healthy routine, support other people in your community, and connect with those who might be isolated.

The second thing that you can do is learn more about the stigmas of mental health. As we discussed, researchers are increasingly coming to the view that mental health conditions are strictly biological processes. Individual patients do not choose their health problems. You might, therefore, want to reach out in ways that highlight this important point.

Next, you could treat yourself to a spot of pampering or a well-deserved vacation. Regular working life can be tough. But going away for a week in the sun gives you a chance to recharge your batteries and gain a new lease on life.

Finally, you can attend events and share information related to mental health with your friends and family on social media.

Here’s to a brighter and healthier future!

National Immigrants Day History

History of National Immigrants Day

America is the world’s great experiment in freedom and individual rights, and unlike any other nation on our planet, it was founded and built entirely by immigrants. Americans are citizens either by birth or by choice, abiding under a common flag and constitution, united by its legacy as a land of freedom and opportunity.

It is easy to forget that as a nation of immigrants, we are the sum of every idea and dream that ever stepped ashore with an immigrant seeking new opportunities in the United States. Most of those ideas and dreams passed through Ellis Island, America’s first federal immigration center.

Before 1890, the 42 individual states then comprising the United States of America regulated the flow of immigration into the United States. Europeans began fleeing political instability, restrictive religious laws, and deteriorating economic conditions in record numbers, leading to massive numbers of immigrants arriving on American shores by 1890. To ease the burden on individual states the federal government took over responsibility for processing immigrant arrivals.

Ellis Island in New York Harbor opened in 1892 as an immigrant station, becoming the primary port of entry for most immigration into the U.S. after 1890. Immigrants also entered the U.S. through other port cities, including Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Francisco, Savannah, Miami, and New Orleans. Ellis Island was the busiest because New York was the preferred port of entry for most ships arriving in America.

From opening day on January 1, 1890, until the day Ellis Island closed in November 1954, over 12 million immigrants passed through the Ellis Island immigration station, along with hopes and dreams of a better life for themselves and their families. Most of those Ellis Island immigrants shared a common dream: of becoming an American citizen. In return for pledging allegiance and loyalty to the United States and its Constitution, immigrants who chose to become naturalized citizens were rewarded with all the rights and privileges afforded U.S. citizens, and the freedom to pursue “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

As we celebrate National Immigrants Day, we also celebrate the determination, ingenuity, and spirit immigrants continue to add to our melting pot of cultures we call America.

The United States of America is known as the world’s melting pot, and every year on October 28 National Immigrants Day gives us a reason to reflect on just how unique that distinction is among the world’s 195 sovereign nations. German-American Heritage Month History

History of German-American Heritage Month

In October 1683 German families began settling in Pennsylvania. Since then, German Americans have contributed greatly to our society. As well as the already mentioned Easter Bunny and Santa, the Germans have had a huge influence in car manufacturing, the building of churches, the arts, and even the language. Love a good hamburger? That came from Hamburg in Germany. Hugely historical entrepreneurs such as Heinz, Chrysler, Boeing, and Rockefeller all have German American heritage.

The first proclamation of German-American Heritage Month was issued by Ronald Reagan in October 1987, and since then we have been celebrating every year.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2021

Tip: Del Sol promo codes: 50% Off Del Sol Promo Codes, Coupons October 2021

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is designed to unify women and men all across the world who have been victims of domestic violence. It is important to recognize that domestic violence impacts millions of people, and it’s not only women who are victims; many men suffer domestic violence as well.

It is a problem across every status, culture, religion, and race. There are many different forms of domestic violence as well, which is why raising awareness is so critical.

History Of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence first started Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1981. Back then, it was a Day Of Unity. However, it quickly evolved into a full week. Then, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month took place in 1987.

There have been some significant moments in society over the years with regard to domestic violence. In 1994, the Violence Against Women Act was passed. This was led by Senator Joe Biden, and it is considered a landmark in our fight against domestic violence. The legislation was put in place to ensure that victims received services and programs and that offenders were held accountable. There are great efforts all around the world in order to reduce domestic violence, but there is still a lot that needs to be done, which is why Domestic Violence Awareness Month is so important.

Signs You Are In An Abusive Relationship

A lot of people do not realize that they are in an abusive relationship. Here are some of the signs that you could be in an abusive relationship that you need to get out of…

  • Your partner sexually or physically abuses you. If they ever make you have sex with them when you don’t want to, hit you, shove you, or push you, this is domestic abuse.
  • Your partner threatens you or your family.
  • Your partner puts your down. They attack your capabilities, mental health, looks, or intelligence. They blame you for their violent outbursts.
  • Your partner is jealous. They may isolate you from your family or friends or they may accuse you of not being faithful.
  • Your partner is possessive. They may check up on you all of the time and they may get angry if you hang out with certain people.
  • Your partner has strangled you, beat you, or hit you in the past.

Emotional Abuse

When we talk about raising awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it’s important that we acknowledge emotional abuse. This is a much bigger problem than a lot of people realize. Just because you don’t have bruises on your skin does not mean you are not being abused. A lot of women and men suffer from emotional abuse, and it is no less destructive. Unfortunately, emotional abuse is often overlooked or minimized, even by those experiencing this.

Emotional abusers look to chip away at your feelings of independence and self-worth. You can end up feeling like you do not have anything without your abusive partner or that there is no way out of your relationship.

Emotional abuse includes verbal abuse. This includes controlling behavior, intimidation, isolation, shaming, blaming, name-calling, and yelling. Abusers who use psychological or emotional abuse will often throw about threats of physical violence, as well as other repercussions if you do not do what they demand.

The scars of emotional abuse run deep, and they are very real! You may assume that physical abuse is a lot worse, as people can end up with physical wounds and send you to the hospital. However, emotional abuse can be just as damaging. Sometimes, it can even be worse. This is why it is important to raise awareness of all types of domestic violence and abuse.

Financial abuse is one of the subtler forms of emotional abuse. Some examples of this include:

  • Taking your money or stealing from your
  • Sabotaging your job – calling constantly or making you miss work
  • Preventing you from choosing your own career or working
  • Restricting you to an allowance
  • Withholding basic necessities, such as shelter, medications, clothes, and food
  • Making you account for every penny you spend
  • Withholding credit cards or money
  • Rigidly controlling your finances

How To Observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month

There are a number of different ways that you can observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One option is to spread awareness about domestic violence, including the impact it has on people and how to spot the signs. This is something that you can do from your computer. You can post messages on social media so that your friends, family, and followers learn about domestic violence. You may also decide to host an event.

Fundraising is another thing that you can do in order to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month. From bake sales to fun runs, there are many different events that you can organize in order to raise awareness about domestic violence and raise funds for victims too. You don’t have to opt for a community event either. You may decide to simply have some friends and family around your home and host a wine tasting evening or a cook-off. You can then raise awareness about domestic violence and ask people to donate.

Speaking Up If You Think Someone Is Being Abused

If you think that someone you know is being abused, it is important to speak up. A lot of people worry that it is none of their business, yet you could save a person’s life by speaking up. It’s better to speak up, even if you’re wrong, rather than saying nothing at all.

Simply talk to the person in private and let them know that you are concerned. Mention the signs and why it has worried you. Tell them that you will honor their privacy if they open up to you, and tell them that you can help them in any way possible. Often, people in domestic relationships need someone to help them out of the situation, and so one conversation can make all of the difference.

Dyslexia Awareness Month 2021

Tip: HargrovesCycles UK coupon codes: HargrovesCycles UK £10 Off Your Order Over £200

Being able to read and write with ease is something most of us simply take for granted. But imagine what it would be like to look at a page of text and see distorted letters swirling before your eyes, or not seeing the difference between the letters “b” and “d”, etc. Sounds pretty awful, doesn’t it?

However, this is a problem that affects from 5% to 10% of the world’s population, making their lives more difficult each and every day. Dyslexia Awareness Month is the perfect time to think about how much harder dyslexic people’s lives are than our own and try to be more understanding of their situation.

History of Dyslexia Awareness Month

Dyslexia was first identified in German physician Oswald Berkhan in 1881 and officially named “dyslexia” by ophthalmologist Rudolph Berlin 6 years later. Berkhan discovered the existence of the developmental reading disorder later named dyslexia while studying the case of a young boy who had severe problems learning to read and write properly, despite being overall bright and intellectually and physically capable.

Since dyslexia was discovered, physicians the world over have been working on different ways to help the dyslexic manage their disorder, and a special dyslexia font has been invented to help those afflicted to read more easily. Dyslexia Awareness Month was Created by The International Dyslexia Association and takes place over the entire course of October each year.

How to Celebrate Dyslexia Awareness Month

The best way to celebrate Dyslexia Awareness Month would be to do your best to see for yourself what being dyslexic means, and just how much it can impair your abilities to do different things you usually never think twice about, like reading your favorite magazine or billboards. Many images and videos have been made to help people understand how dyslexia works, so take the time to go through some of them in order to understand the extent of dyslexic people’s hardships.

Another thing you could do is take part in the various Dyslexia Awareness events organized worldwide to help people become more aware of the disorder. These include exhibitions of art created by the dyslexic that are visual representations of how they see the world. There are also dances organized in various places that anyone wishing to support the cause may attend and encourage others to attend as well.

There are also numerous workshops you can attend that will teach you what you can do to make the lives of those with dyslexia around you a bit easier—even something as small as a bit more patience and understanding can go a long way. You will also learn how to recognize the signs that your child may be dyslexic in order to prevent him or her from experiencing the embarrassment and frustration that accompanies not being able to read properly.

Early detection of dyslexia can work miracles for a child’s self-esteem by helping the child understand he or she is not worse or less intelligent than other children, and that steps can be taken to reduce their problems at school. And if you do not have enough time to do any of these things, you can also donate a bit of money to The International Dyslexia Association, that has been working tirelessly for years to make sure dyslexic children, teens and adults don’t fall behind and miss out on all of the benefits a good education has to offer.

  3. It takes away U.S. jobs

Most of the products and services offered through fair trade are not generally available in the U.S. or represented in the U.S. These products represent diversity, not replacement.

Canadian Library Month 2021

Tip: St-Hubert coupon codes: St-Hubert Promo Codes, Coupons October 2021

Libraries are an important part of society. They provide books that give us a wealth of knowledge and insight into many different topics, making them a hub of knowledge that everyone can explore. Perhaps that is why there has been an entire month dedicated to it in Canada, and if you want to know more about this day, then you will find some information down below.

Every year there is one month in the calendar that is known as Canadian Library month, and it is a time for everyone to think about the role that libraries play in the lives of Canadians. Once they were just a place to store books, but now they have become a central hub for people in the community, and they promote many important values such as freedom, political life, and justice.

History of Candian Library Month

This event is an important one, as it highlights just how much libraries do for the society of Canada, including providing a variety of classes in subjects that are relevant to society such as health and wellness, computer skills, parenting and some of those other subjects that you won’t be taught about in a classroom!

Over 60% of Canadians have one or more library cards, and you will be welcomed into your local library with open arms. Despite the world of good that libraries do, they have come under attack in recent years by the government with budget cuts but still manage to keep an outstanding service going for all Canadians. That is why Canadian Library Month is held to reflect on all the good that these institutions do.

While this is a fairly new event, in fact only going as far back as 2017, this does not mean it is not a popular one. There are many libraries and library partners take part to show everyone just how valuable they are to society. The theme for 2017 and 2018 were the same, titled ‘A Visit Will Get You Thinking’ and explored the roles that libraries play in educating and teaching the community some of the most important skills and values.

How to celebrate Candian Library Month

Supporting your local library is easier than you think. Different libraries will hold different events, workshops, and other options for you to join in with. There is going to be fun for the whole community, so just head down to your local library to find out more about what it is doing this year for this special month.

A lot of schools take part in this event too, holding reading challenges and competitions to encourage younger children into a love of reading. During Candian Library Month, let people know how your library has helped you by either organizing an event, writing to your government representative or even just making a post on social media about how much it means to you.

Keep using the services that your local library provides, not just in this month, but every month to make sure you are keeping them going!

Smart is Cool Day 2021

Tip: Ulta Black Friday 2021 Sales: Ulta Black Friday 2021 Coupons & Deals

If there’s ever a time to show off your IQ test results, Smart is Cool Day is probably it. Though it’s not clear where the tradition started, the eggheaded individual’s idea was absolutely brilliant.

Schools typically put together shows for their pupils and students and invite both street-smart youngsters and successful degree holders to speak to them about the importance of staying in school. But there’s really no need for that, because all it takes to see smart people are cool is to Google Mayim Bialik, Zach Braff or Matthew McConaughey and to check out their background.

To celebrate Smart is Cool Day, put on your vintage T-shirt and your corduroys and check out Sheldon Cooper’s latest adventures. Then test your wits at the IQTest.com and tell all your friends that you decided to become a doctor. Then download the Mensa app and enrol to become a Mensa member. Don’t forget to wear a cap saying ‘I make smart cool’ and to post your selfie for all to see, because it’s always nice to share your gifts with your friends, intellectual or otherwise.

National Pescatarian Month History

History of National Pescatarian Month

Before we dig deeper into the pescatarian lifestyle and its benefits, it might be helpful to understand where this practice comes from. The word pescatarian is a neologism combining the Italian word for fish (pesce) with the English word vegetarian. While the term may be a modern invention, the concept of pescatarianism goes back thousands of years. Among the earliest known vegetarians in written history were the Pythagoreans, who took their name from the great Greek philosopher, Pythagoras. They were believed to have subscribed to a meatless diet, but it is strongly suspected that they also ate fish, which would make them some of our first unofficial pescatarians.

Throughout the centuries, many other groups adopted a pescatarian-style diet – some by choice, others by necessity. Famously, the Benedictine monks of the Middle Ages abstained from meat but not from fish until at least the 14th century. Other religious orders over time also abstained from meat, qualifying them as pescatarians as well.

The modern vegetarian movement in the U.S. has been around since the mid-19th century. It was adopted by certain social and religious organizations and even linked to prominent abolitionists and suffragists. It was not until the early 1990s, however, that the term pescatarian would enter the discussion, coined to describe a vegetarian who also eats fish.

The full-fledged pescatarian movement subsequently caught on alongside a noted rise in the popularity of vegetarian and vegan diets. In fact, the pescatarian diet – which features fish as its main source of protein – is sometimes viewed as a plausible transition diet on one’s way to the more-limiting end of the spectrum.

Pescatarianism has flourished over the last 25 years and is now a widely accepted dietary practice that’s fed by a profusion of cookbooks, online resources, and endorsements from its followers. Numerous celebrities, including actor David Duchovny, author Margaret Atwood, and musicians Billy Corgan, Amanda Palmer and Henry Rollins, have adopted the diet. So has renowned fitness trainer Jillian Michaels.

October is National Pescatarian Month, an opportunity to learn more about one of the most healthful, fulfilling and tasty lifestyle options available. But first, you may be asking, “What is a pescatarian?” Pescatarians consume seafood combined with a vegetarian diet. It’s a person who eliminates all meat from their diet with the exception of fish (like a vegetarian who still loves sushi or grilled salmon or shrimp!). Making up roughly 5% of the population, pescatarians follow a diet of seafood plus grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, dairy, fruit, veggies and eggs.

Experts say “going pescatarian” can augment your intake of vital nutrients (such as omega-3 fatty acids) and lead to numerous health benefits, including improved brain and heart health, protection against diabetes, decreased inflammation, and more. Despite its many benefits only about 5 percent of the population are pescatarians.

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) sponsors National Pescatarian Month as a way to raise awareness about the benefits of a pescatarian diet, spread some fun tips on how to adopt a pescatarian lifestyle (for a few days, weeks, months, or even longer), and highlight all of the amazing ways fish and seafood can be an integral part of any diet or lifestyle. NFI has developed a number of resources for anyone who is pesca-curious including a newly-released e-cookbook, and tons of featured content on their popular Dish on Fish blog.

Well, some things are invaluable, but we can certainly try our best by being there for the parades and festivals throughout this month of celebration.

Toy Camera Day 2021

Tip: Cloud Of Goods promo codes: 5% Off Cloud Of Goods Promo Codes, Coupons October 2021

Toy Camera Day is the yearly event that honors the ridiculous photo-taking capacity of outdated toy cameras.

Becky Ramotowski’s idea was inspired by Pinhole Photography Day, because she believed that, quite frankly, there weren’t enough terrible nostalgic pictures on the Internet.

To that end, the creator dedicated an entire website to the 120 and Polaroid film, low-fidelity, blurry picture-spewing cameras. Diana and Holga cameras are flagship mediocre toy cameras that are featured extensively on the website in the hope of urging amateur photographers to share their amazingly poor-quality creations.

To celebrate WTCD, search your children’s room for that run-down Brownie toy camera which has witnessed enough silliness to last it a lifetime and take photos from dawn to dusk so that just maybe, just maybe, you may have one discernible composition to share with the folks at wtcd.org.

Emotional Wellness Month History

History of Emotional Wellness Month

With our hectic schedules, devices pinging us from every direction, and modern life becoming increasingly uncertain, it’s more crucial than ever to maintain a sense of calm and balance. Emotional Wellness Month, observed all October, reminds us to disconnect and take a time out for our brain.

Maintaining a healthy emotional balance helps us make healthy choices, have good relationships, and achieve our goals. Emotional wellness gives us a toolkit for handling life’s stresses, navigating relationships, and keeping ourselves motivated. Mindfulness, a simple but powerful concept inspired by Eastern meditation traditions, is a useful way to practice engaging in the present, accepting events and feelings without judgment, and moving through life with calm and ease.

Did you know good sleep and a healthy diet can have powerful effects on your emotions? If you’re feeling depressed or anxious, make sure you’re getting proper rest and eating nutritious food. Consider your relationship to yourself and your loved ones. Do you feel confident and optimistic about your future? Do you have good communication with those you care about? Are you able to express your feelings and process difficult times in a healthy way?

High levels of stress can lead to physical complications like high blood pressure, headaches, and even chronic conditions like diabetes. If you’re having a hard time enjoying life or experiencing the physical symptoms of high stress, talk to your doctor or a therapist who can guide you toward activities and treatment options that can help you feel like yourself again.

Tip: Softball Rampage coupon codes: Softball Rampage $20 Off When You Spend $150+

Did you know your emotional well-being has powerful effects on your overall health? Mental and emotional stress can translate into negative physical reactions, a weakened immune system, and poor health.

“Emotional wellness” refers to our ability to process feelings in a healthy, positive way and manage the stress of everyday life. If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, try a soothing activity like meditation or yoga to slow down and clear your mind.

Use Emotional Wellness Month as an opportunity to take charge of your emotional wellness, find the soothing activities that work for you, and, most of all, breathe!

Tip: Alex promo codes: Alex 20% Off Orders $50+

We may not think of a caffeine addiction as being something from which we need to recover. But those of us who have tried to abstain from our morning (or midmorning or early afternoon) coffee or soda break know exactly what it’s like to try and kick the habit.

Caffeine is added to many of our favorite products, and it occurs naturally in many others. Often, one of the main reasons we love these products is because of the added kick of that ingredient, natural or otherwise. We can help you get a fix on caffeine addictions with this compendium of facts, figures and cool gifts in observance of Caffeine Addiction Recovery Month in October.

Dysautonomia Awareness Month 2021

Tip: SAA promo codes: SAA Promo Codes, Coupons October 2021

Dysautonomia is a term that you may never have heard about before, and that’s why Dysautonomia Awareness Month is so important! The purpose of this occasion is to increase the support that people with this condition receive in their communities, as well as lowering diagnostic delays. Read on to discover more about Dysautonomia Awareness Month and why it is so important.

Dysautonomia is a term that is used to describe a number of different conditions that have an impact on the autonomic nervous symptom. It can come in many different forms, yet the key here is that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is impacted. The ANS is imperative because it plays a number of key roles, including moderating the heart rate, keeping blood pressure steady, regulating breathing patterns, and maintaining a constant internal temperature. It is also involved in excretion, sexual arousal, and pupil dilation.

Fast Facts About Dysautonomia

  • There is no single treatment that can address all Dysautonomias.
  • The most common sort of Dysautonomias is neurocardiogenic syncope, which results in fainting. Millions of people around the world are impacted by this.
  • Primary Dysautonomia tends to be due to a degenerative disease or it is inherited.
  • Secondary Dysautonomias typically happen because of another injury or condition.
  • There are approximately 15 different types of Dysautonomia.

History Of Dysautonomia Awareness Month

The first Dysautonomia Awareness Month was launched in October, 2012 by Dysautonomia International. Since then, more than 1,250 awareness activities have taken place all over the world. The color turquoise has been attributed to the month, and so one way that a lot of people show their support for dysautonomia is by wearing a turquoise ribbon on their clothing throughout October. This is also a great way to raise awareness because you can be sure that a lot of people will ask you why you are wearing such a ribbon, and this will give you the opportunity to explain that it is to raise awareness for dysautonomia and why this is important.

Observing Dysautonomia Awareness Month

There are a number of different ways that you can observe Dysautonomia Awareness month. For example, why not host a fundraising benefit? There are plenty of different ways that you can raise money and get lots of people involved. A classic bake sale never fails! After all, who doesn’t love a good slice of cake? From 5k runs and walks to yoga classes in your local park; the list is endless. All you need is something fun that plenty of people can get involved in. You then have the perfect recipe for raising awareness and donations! If you want to do something on a smaller scale, amongst family and friends, you can do a fundraising dinner or cook-off. You don’t have to do something on a community scale. We know that this is a massive undertaking, and every little bit definitely helps!

Here are some simple fundraising tips that can help you with this…

  • Put together a list of potential donors, from co-workers to your friends and family members.
  • Set a goal for your fundraising and continue to work toward it, and raise it. Whenever you are getting close, raise your goal some more. This will inspire you to keep working hard and achieving.
  • Rather than sending emails, send handwritten letters first for a personal touch.
  • Remember your inspiration – Dysautonomia.
  • Use online fundraising tools to help you. There are some great tools out there that are going to help you to manage your fundraising efforts more effectively.
  • Make it personal. People will donate because you are the one that is asking them to do so. Therefore, communicate your passion to people. This is a vital part of your fundraising success.
  • You also need to make sure that you follow-up. It is common for a lot of people to put things off. Rather than simply ignoring you, they have probably got busy, as they have a lot of responsibilities on their plate. A simple reminder can make a massive difference.
  • Send Thank You notes. It is important that people realize just how much you appreciate their efforts. Sending a note thanking someone for their donation and/or their effort can make them feel special and it will make them more inclined to help again in the future. After all, the effort to raise funds and awareness for Dysautonomia is a never-ending one.

It is also worth pointing out that there are many events that are going on around the world throughout October, many of which have been set up by Dysautonomia International, so it’s worth looking on their website to see if there are any in your area. This includes everything from educational courses to light celebrations, with some even starting at the end of September running right through until the start of November. Check these out every year to see if there is something going on near you!

Of course, there is no better way to observe Dysautonomia Awareness month than by raising some awareness. There are lots of different ways you can do this. Something as small as sharing some posts on Dysautonomia on your social media pages can make a massive difference. You will find lots of content and infographics online that can easily be shared with your friends and followers. This is a great way to get the message out and to spread the knowledge. You can also spend the day enhancing your own knowledge. There are lots of great resources online and books about the condition, so why not dedicate a portion of your day to reading these and finding out more about Dysautonomia?

As mentioned earlier, the color turquoise has become associated with this month, and you will find some great turquoise graphic downloads on the Dysautonomia International website. You can download these graphics for use on your website or social media profiles. You can also print them off and place them around the office, for example. It is an easy and effective way to spread the word.

National Liver Awareness Month History

History of National Liver Awareness Month

Until the seventeenth century, the liver was believed to be the origin of blood, with Roman philosophers describing the organ as warm and moist, and “the source of the veins and the principal instrument of blood production.” Several ancient scholars also assumed that a fire perpetually burned in the liver, leading them to consider it the spot where the human soul resided.

Liver ailments have been known to mankind for centuries. Autopsies performed on Egyptian mummies showed liver damage caused by a widespread parasitic infection called Bilharziasis. The Greek physician Hippocrates described liver abscess in 400 B.C. and the mythological story “Prometheus” also implies that the Greeks may have been aware of the liver’s ability to regenerate from severe damage.

The first liver transplant was performed by Francis Moore on a dog in 1958. The first human liver transplant was in 1963 and was performed by Dr. Thomas E. Starzl, setting the precedent for liver treatments still performed to this day.

Recently we have begun to start observing National Liver Awareness Month. The annual occurrence serves to highlight the importance of the organ and to celebrate and medical discoveries made by scientists.

Healthy Lung Month History

History of Healthy Lung Month

Lung health has been a concern throughout human history and a phenomenon that has intrigued doctors, health workers, and scientists. Diseases such as tuberculosis, the flu, and many other airborne ailments have been around for a long time, looming over societies like a deadly blanket.

Tuberculosis, or TB, has been among the most prominent lung diseases in history, with traces of it even being found in ancient Egyptian mummies. It was tuberculosis that prompted the start of the American Lung Association in 1904.

More recently anti-smoking movements have joined in the healthy lung movement. Cigarette packaging warnings were established in 1966 and years of campaigning have  successfully led to the change in perception of smoking among the American public, with Americans now realizing smoking is a major cause of cancer.

Lung disease affects a huge number of Americans. Around 10 million are diagnosed with chronic bronchitis each year, 25 million are believed to be living with asthma, and over 150,000 die from lung cancer annually. Our lungs are important and Healthy Lung Month is an opportunity to create awareness around healthy lifestyle choices.

Listicles National Chiropractic Month 2021

5 Tips For A Pain-Free Back

  1. Work on Your Posterior Core

Your core comprises both abdominal and back muscles. Generally, most people have stronger abdominal muscles. Spend more time on the muscles in your back when you are at the gym.

  2. Practice Endurance Over Strength

Focus on getting more repetitions out of your back exercises than increasing the weight your are lifting. The "plank," an isometric core exercise, is a great way to strengthen the muscles in your back.

  3. Try the "Hip Hinge" Instead

When you're bending down to lift something, make it a point to do the "hip hinge" while keeping your back straight. When you avoid bending your back, you will avoid most back injuries.

  4. Wear Better Shoes

Shoes help your body and spine stay aligned. They should fit nicely around your heel without being too tight, to avoid a bad walking or standing posture.

  5. Get Up From Your Desk Regularly

Your lower spine is three times more stressed when you are sitting, compared to standing. Long periods of continued sitting can lead to chronic back conditions. Take a break from work every 30 minutes or so. Even a quick walk is enough.

Almost eight in 10 Americans have an episode of lower back pain at some point in their lives. Chronic back pain can result in lowered productivity, which can adversely affect your earning potential — not to mention your quality of life. Often, pain-killing opioids are prescribed as a quick-fix solution. Excessive use of opioids can be detrimental to your health. National Chiropractic Month, observed every October, emphasizes alternative methods of treatment, which yield better results.

World Menopause Month History

History of World Menopause Month

World Menopause Month was created as a means to raise awareness of the stage in a woman’s life when she stops menstruating. It helps women understand the possible health issues associated when approaching, during, and after menopause. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Menopause Society designated October as World Menopause Month. October 18 was also dubbed as World Menopause Day.

In England in the 1800’s doctors prescribed a pre-meal mixture of carbonated soda to their menopausal patients. Opium and cannabis were also prescribed by doctors to curb menopause symptoms. Other remedies included a large plaster (belladonna) placed at the pit of the patient’s stomach, and some even gave out vaginal injections of acetate of lead. Doctors were then surprised when hysteria was one of the many symptoms presented.

In the 1890s, Ovariin was prescribed by doctors. Ovariin was made by desiccating and pulverizing cow ovaries. It was one of the first known commercially available treatments for menopause symptoms. By the 1930s menopause was being described as a deficiency disease. Over time Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) became commonly used and is the most sophisticated remedy for menopause symptoms to date.

The first World Menopause Month was in October 2014. The International Menopause Society promoted it and launched a campaign called ‘‘Prevention of Diseases After Menopause.’’ The aim was to bring awareness to chronic diseases that were more likely to affect women after menopause.

During World Menopause Month, let’s talk about it openly. It’s a normal, natural part of the aging process, yet many women are still worried about going through menopause. Sure, there are some less desirable symptoms that accompany changing hormones — like hot flashes — but there are also things to celebrate, such as no more periods, PMS, or worrying about unwanted pregnancies. Add to that the increased self-confidence, self-awareness, and greater freedom that menopause often brings, and October can become a time of amazing personal growth and excitement. Embrace it, don’t try to erase it!

Listicles Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2021

Five Reasons Why October Is The Pinkest Month

  1. Breast cancer doesn't discriminate

Although breast cancer is more prevalent among American white women, African-American women tend to die from the disease more often.

  2. Breast cancer can baffle scientists

Scientists don't really understand why the left breast seems to develop cancer more often than the right breast.

  3. Breast cancer surgery was a trailblazer

The very first operation to use anesthesia to deaden pain was a breast cancer surgery.

  4. Men get it too

Overall, only one percent of American males are diagnosed with breast cancer, but African-American men just like women in their community, are more prone to die from the disease.

  5. Breast cancer — the nuns' disease

At one time, breast cancer was called "the nuns' disease" because it seemed to afflict more nuns than women in the general population.

Plaidurday began when It all began in Lansing, Michigan when Bugsy Sailor was heckled by his coworkers and made fun of him for wearing plaid. Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2021

Tip: Golf Town coupon codes: Golf Town Up to 40% Off Select Front Nine Deals

Tip: Inc. promo codes: CMS Peripherals, Inc. free gift

We all have a history, and that history extends far back beyond ourselves. Every ancestor we have has left their mark on us and has been the formation of tradition and culture within our lives. There is a certain comfort in knowing where we came from, and Family History Day encourages us to delve into the people who came together to make us who we are today. But our genealogy is even more important than just knowing our origins!

History of Family History Day

Our family histories have been important since far into pre-history, and have only grown in importance in the years since. Our family history tells us who we are, and where we’re from, and what great line of ancestors we all come from. Family history was held in high regard by people of every stripe, carrying the honors and dishonors of everyone who came before them. In the medieval ages, one’s lineage was of such import that entire texts were created tracing the lineage of every noble person in the various lands.

The science of studying one’s family history is called genealogy, and in recent years its become important for reasons beyond tracking your family line. Many conditions and diseases have been discovered to be congenital, meaning that they pass from mother or father to child. Tracking your family history means that doctors can keep an eye out for these conditions during your visits, and may be able to prevent or slow their progress as you age.

Who would have thought that Family History Day would be as much about where you came from, as where you’re going? With the newest technology, we can now ensure that you and your descendants will live with greater health.

How to Celebrate Family History Day

It all starts with collecting what you know about your family and compiling it together. If you’re lucky like we are you’ll have a family member who had a passion for genealogy and will have started the footwork for you, if not, its time to hit the books! There are websites and organizations that can help you trace your family line, including using DNA samples to help identify unknown relatives! Who knows how big your family really is? Family History Day encourages you to find out!
