Tin was introduced as an alternate canning material in 1810 by Peter Durand, a British merchant.

Canning is Born

French confectioner Nicholas Appert developed a method of keeping food preserved, using glass jars and cork tops. He earned a 12,000-franc prize from the French government for winning the invention contest.
